In the world of measurement, these two terms are often used interchangeably. However, there is an important difference.
Calibration is the process of comparing a data logger against a certified reference instrument to determine its measurement error. The device itself is not modified, its accuracy is simply verified and documented.
Adjustment goes one step further. After identifying any deviations, the data logger's internal calibration parameters are modified to improve its accuracy. Once adjusted, the instrument is calibrated again to verify and document its new performance.
Why does this distinction matter?
In highly regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and food production, knowing whether an instrument has been calibrated or calibrated and adjusted can make a significant difference in terms of accuracy, compliance, and confidence in your measurement data.
